What is a seanchai? Seanchai (sha-na-key) is the Irish word for storyteller.

Seanchai Books is located in beautiful Charlottesville, Virginia, home of the University of Virginia. C-ville's about 120 miles southwest of Washington, DC, 70 miles west of Richmond, VA, and just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We sold our books out of Blue Whale Books, a bookshop (115 W. Main St.) on the pedestrian Downtown Mall in Charlottesville, but the joys of parenthood and other responsibilities have led us to close our retail location after nine wonderful years. Be sure you still stop in and say hi to Scott and the rest of the crew at Blue Whale.

We have retrenched to our lavishly appointed book warehouse, kindly located in the basement of staffers Jerry and Anne Farrell. Seanchai Books has about 5000 Irish books we are now selling via mail-order and by appointment. Please feel free to contact us at seanchai@cstone.net or 434-295-8478.

We started off our bookselling life establishing a general interest shop here in town, but decided in 1997 to specialize in Irish/Celtic books. While we both have other full-time jobs, Irish books, music and culture are our passion (and the frequent impetus for weekend road trips). We are also very proud every day to pass along and share our love of reading, singing and dancing to our two sons, Conor and Brendan, who have brought so much to our lives. Please enjoy this site!
